21 Days of Prayer and Fasting: Day 1

It’s that time of year to clear the chocolate out of your cupboards, prepare your vegetarian meals and quit those cheeky Mcflurrys from McDonald’s (or maybe it’s just me!). Today is Day 1 of our 21 days of prayer and fasting, where we encourage our church family to quieten the noise of the world so that we can tune in better and walk more closely with the Holy Spirit. ‍

The ways in which we do this are through Daniel fasting, cutting out meats and treats, and committing to intentional Scripture reading and prayer gatherings. You may also choose to come off social media or stop watching TV and YouTube.

There is something spiritually significant about prayer and fasting and we see this throughout the Bible.

In Matthew 6, Jesus teaches His disciples how to pray and fast and implies that it should be a normal and regular part of our lives.

In Isaiah 58, God tells His people that the kind of fasting He requires is that which looses chains of injustice, sets the oppressed free, shares food with the hungry and provides for those in need.

True fasting leads to action.

In Ezekiel 22:30, God says, ‘I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one.’

People and nations can be changed through prayer and fasting. It is not just about us, but it is about an awakening to God’s plans and purposes for our neighbourhoods and the nations of the world.

We would encourage you to ask the Lord how you can engage with these 21 days. Ask Him what you can give up and how you can seek Him even more intentionally during this period of time.

May it be said that the Lord found a people in Wolverhampton (or wherever you are joining from) in September 2026, eagerly desiring to stand in the gap and see transformation in our world in the name of Jesus.
